Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition (BWAC) Summer Shows: Palette Unlimited and Black and White

Opening weekend: Saturday, July 29th, 2016 and Sunday, July 30th, 2017 It’s summertime for the artists of the Brooklyn Waterfront Artist Coalition and the art-lovers who eagerly await every BWAC exhibit. Mid-summer is also the middle of BWAC’s fortieth year; for our 2017 Summer Shows we present the juried Black & White 2017 exhibit and Palette Unlimited. A full calendar of performance and events is planned for each weekend the shows are on view. Admission to the Gallery and all its special events is free, donations gladly accepted. Palette Unlimited is the exhibiting members’ 25th annual summer show at the Pier. Over 150 artists are exhibiting. ‘Palette Unlimited’ is a true definition of the visual identity of BWAC. When I think of BWAC members, I see a palette of unending variety of imaginations, technical skills, and a range of colors which challenges both us and visitors alike! This fusion of art comes together again, this summer; to form the artistic expression and creativity that is BWAC in ‘Palette Unlimited’. – Show chair Anujan Ezhikode Our third national juried Black & White show presents artwork by artists from around the country. Noted juror Alison Hokanson, Assistant Curator in the Department of European Paintings at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, selected 110 pieces from almost 1200 submissions, to put together this spectacular exhibit. Ms. Hokanson said of her choices, I looked for pieces that demonstrated a flair for the medium and had an element of the unexpected formally, emotionally, or in their perspective on the world. Whatever the style, the mood, or the message, that spirit of experimentation and discovery was most important to me. The opening reception on July 29th showcases Paula Jeanine Bennett and Jenny Hill, who bring their soul-jazz project BRIGHT RED DRESS to the BWAC stage. The band features great classic jazz repertoire enhanced with horn harmonies, a killer rhythm section and the sweet-hot musical skills of Paul Jeanine at the helm. Check out the Awards Ceremony for the juried Black & White 2017 Exhibit at 3 pm on opening day, and be sure to cast your vote for Peoples’ Choice Award. The performance calendar during the weekend summer shows, July 29th – August 20th, include musicians Braxton Hicks, Harry Oppenheimer, performers presented by the Jazz Foundation, and many, many more. There are also spoken word events, including the ever-popular Word Cabaret, and a book reading on the schedule. BWAC’s 25,000 sf Civil War-era gallery is located at a spectacular waterfront site overlooking the Statue of Liberty and New York Harbor. It is across from the Fairway supermarket and down the block from IKEA in the Red Hook section of Brooklyn, set amidst trendy boutiques and restaurants. Accessible by public transportation, NYC Ferry, IKEA Water Taxi and biking is a breeze! Admission to the Gallery, the waterfront view and all special events is free to everyone, donations gladly accepted. The show is open weekends 1-6PM and runs through August 20 481 Van Brunt (Door 7) in Red Hook. 718-596-2506 bwacinfo@aol.com or for more information, go to bwac.org
